Humanism is a philosophical and ethical stance that emphasizes the value and agency of human beings, individually and collectively, and generally prefers critical thinking and evidence (rationalism, empiricism) over unthinking acceptance of dogma or superstition.
This group is for people who embrace our most reliable methods for gaining knowledge: logical, scientific assessment of empirical evidence. All knowledge comes in degrees of certainty. If a speculation provides no sound, empirical evidence, it's just speculation. If a hypothesis doesn't match with experiment, it's wrong. Consensus among experts is extremely valuable and almost always represents the most reliable knowledge but if sound, valid, repeatable experiment shows it's wrong, experiment wins.
Critical thinking, an integral part of the scientific method, has proven to be our only tool for gaining RELIABLE knowledge. We want to promote that reality, to help each other become better at combating the nonsense that so frequently permeates, and damages our vulnerable existence.
In a world where people believe in all kinds of things for all kinds of reasons, it's easy to feel alone. We want to learn from each other and be part of the solution to the problems faced by humanity. And it's just nice to have an intelligent conversation sometimes!
