Despite the fact that there are tens of millions of nontheistic Americans, we remain one of the most marginalized groups in the country. While the Secular Coalition for America is fighting against religious privileging at the federal level in Washington, D.C., some of the most extreme attacks on the separation of church and state are happening at the state level. 2016 Legislative Session Recap

The fight to retain meaningful separation between church and state took some surprising twists in Georgia this year.  Our General Assembly joined a number of states in attempting to craft a reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision early last summer in Obergefell v. Secular Coalition for Georgia Send Thank You Letter to Governor Deal

Members of the Secular Coalition for Georgia collaboratively drafted and sent this letter to Governor Deal, thanking him for his veto of HB 757, which ensured that Georgia continue to be a state where hate and discimination is not tolerated and all citizens are equal before the law. Secular Coalition for Georgia Applauds Governor Deal for Vetoing HB 757

The Secular Coalition for Georgia has been following HB 757 since its early debates on the House floor. Throughout the process we sent dozens of letters to legislators and the governor urging them not to support this discriminatory legislation. We’re thrilled that Governor Deal has chosen to side with us, the Constitution, and the majority of Georgians by vetoing this bill. We hope to see the end of attempts to privilege religion as lawmakers recognize their constituents want religion protected, not imposed. Action Alert in Georgia! Tell Governor Deal to veto HB 757

The Georgia legislature has passed a bill combining the Pastor Protection Act and the First Amendment Defense Act (formerly HB 284) into one bill in an unprecedented, dangerous attack on religious freedom. Tell Governor Deal to veto the bill.
