Despite the fact that there are tens of millions of nontheistic Americans, we remain one of the most marginalized groups in the country. While the Secular Coalition for America is fighting against religious privileging at the federal level in Washington, D.C., some of the most extreme attacks on the separation of church and state are happening at the state level. We need your help to see real change in Augusta and across Maine.

Hobby Lobby Letter

 This letter was submitted to a number of newspapers in Maine on behalf of the state groups supporting the Secular Coalition for Maine. Written by a member of one of these groups, it was approved by the leadership of these orgs. and reflects the concerns we have about the implications for church and state separation. Email on HB 1814 and SB 862

I sent the following email to Sen. King and sent similar ones to Sen' Collins and Reps. Pingree and Michaud. I urge others to write to them objecting to the law.

Dear Senator King:

Senate Bill 862 -- We Should Protest

Both Maine Senators, Angus King and Susan Collins, are sponsors of Senate Bill 862, the Senate equivalent of House Bill 1814.  These bills allow anyone asserting a “sincerely held religious belief” opposing health insurance to be exempt from the penalties for not enrolling in required health insurance.  (The House bill was sponsored by both Chellie Pingree and Mike Michaud.)  Representative Henry Waxman gave a speech pointing out the obvious potential for abuse. The Maine House today voted 89-52 to accept the Ought Not to Pass recomendation of the Judiciary Committee and ended this session's effort by Sen David Burns to implement his version of a "Religious Freedom Restoration Act" in our state. Thanks to those who took the time to contact their reps and made our voices heard.

LD 1428 voted down in Senate

By a vote of 19 to 16, the Maine Senate today voted down the "Religious Freedom" bill sponsored by Sen David Burns. Another step in the right direction. Read more about LD 1428 voted down in Senate

LD 1428 Public Hearing

FYI there is a public hearing scheduled for this "Religious Freedom" bill on Thurs. Jan 16 at 1:00 pm in room 438 at the State House in Augusta. I will provide testimony for the Secular Coalition for Maine in opposition to the bill. Please consider attending and/or contacting your state reps. to let them know about your concerns.
