Both Maine Senators, Angus King and Susan Collins, are sponsors of Senate Bill 862, the Senate equivalent of House Bill 1814. These bills allow anyone asserting a “sincerely held religious belief” opposing health insurance to be exempt from the penalties for not enrolling in required health insurance. (The House bill was sponsored by both Chellie Pingree and Mike Michaud.) Representative Henry Waxman gave a speech pointing out the obvious potential for abuse.
Why should “religious beliefs” be privileged over other sincerely held beliefs? This law is abomination that Democrats seem to feel compelled to sign on to so they will not lose votes to the GOP, God’s Own Party.
Our representatives’ votes clearly will not be changed, but we should let them know that we don’t like it.
