How to Get Involved with the Secular Coalition for Virginia

Growing up, we are taught that we live in a country where our government is a representation of the people. That we can make a difference. We move into adulthood ready to be the change we want to see, yet often we find that it is not easy to have our voices heard.

While many secular groups provide a safe gathering space for like-minded people, the Secular Coalition for Virginia (SCVA) has a more specific mission statement. The SCVA works to bring secular Virginians together to influence government officials, advocate for separation of church and state, and bring political visibility to the 20 percent of Virginians who are religiously unaffiliated.

As a chapter of the Secular Coalition for America, the SCVA focuses on influencing our government at the state level. We get involved with relevant legislation, discuss our views with lawmakers and educate them about the secular issues that we would like to see addressed. In short, we work to make it easier for secular voices to be heard and respected by our government officials.

However, we need your help to make a difference.

Whether you volunteer as an individual or help us coordinate with your secular group, there are many ways you can get involved. (We will provide training!) Here are some of the ways you can help as an SCVA volunteer:

- Monitoring state legislation

- Making in-person lobby visits with government officials

- Monitoring local media and writing letters to the editor

- Acting as a liaison to your secular group

- Coordinating with Virginia’s secular parents and secular home schooling communities

- Tabling to educate the public and provide outreach at local events

- Helping people sign up for SCVA Action Alerts

- Organizing fundraisers

Through these efforts, our voices can be heard. We can come together to support secular issues which affect many different areas of life, including health policy, education, tax-exemption, and religiously-based discrimination. You can learn more about these issues, our advocacy, and policy recommendation in the Secular Coalition’s Model Secular Policy Guide.

Thank you for your support!
