2016 General Assembly In Review

The 109th Tennessee General Assembly has adjourned, and with election season upon us, it is time to reflect on the victories and defeats we have observed in 2016.  Unfortunately, this year was no exception to the typical parade of anti-secular, anti-LGBT, and anti-choice bills. Action Alert! Tell Governor Haslam to sign legislation eliminating religious exemptions for child abuse and neglect

Did you know that in Tennessee, parents can legally deny their children life-saving medical care if doing so in accordance with their religious beliefs, even if the child is seriously injured or dies as a result? Senate Bill 1761, which just passed the legislature and is on its way to Governor Haslam's desk, would change that.

This legislation would amend Tennessee's criminal code to remove this dangerous loophole to child welfare laws. Religious beliefs are not an excuse to endanger a child's life.
