Our Statement at Certificate of Need Hearing November 26 2013

Secular Coalition for Washington was in attendance at the Department of Health’s 11/26/13 hearing regarding proposed changes to the Certificate of Need process and related rules.  We testified at the hearing and submitted our position statement in writing (see attached file to read our statement.)  The proposed changes by the DOH are in response to the rapid increase in secular and religious hospital mergers across our state and the subsequent loss of, and access to, common and legal medical services in our state such as abortion, physician-assisted suicide, contraception, etc.  Changes would include posting services provided on all hospital and state websites and further defining change of control so that future “affiliations” between secular and religious medical facilities that have previously skirted regulatory control are subject to state oversight.  About 100 people were in attendance representing a variety of organizations and individuals.  The overwhelming majority of speakers were in support of the DOH changes and the most common statement was that the proposed changes were a good start, but much, much more needed to be done.  Stay tuned as on or around 12/10/2013 we should receive an update on how and when these changes might be implemented.  Current information about the DOH process can be found here:  http://www.doh.wa.gov/LicensesPermitsandCertificates/FacilitiesNewRenewo...
