Southeast Alabama Freethought Association

The SouthEast Alabama Freethought Association (SEAFA) is a local 501(c)(3) public educational charity designed to provide educational opportunities to residents of southeast Alabama primarily regarding the Constitutional principle of Church/State Separation and the theory of evolution through natural selection. SEAFA works to promote secularism and freethought and in the process provides opportunities for socializing, networking, and friendship.

Guided by naturalism, inspired by the arts, compelled by truth, we are committed to the pursuit of knowledge, meaning, and responsible ethical codes without reference to supernatural forces. We believe that liberty, discussion, integrity and free inquiry are necessary for truth to flourish and consider reason and science to be the most reliable methods for understanding the universe and improving the human condition.

SEAFA was founded as a group in January of 2009. Since then, SEAFA has grown to over 250 members scattered throughout the Wiregrass area. Our membership includes physicians, attorneys, members of the military, college professors and teachers, retirees and local business people.

SEAFA has participated in many charitable projects locally including Adopt-A-Mile roadside trash pickup, the “Light the Night Walk” for leukemia and lymphoma research and holiday presents for a local children’s home. SEAFA has also raised money for secular national and international relief efforts including Alabama tornado relief.

SEAFA arranges public meetings for group members and the public to interact socially on a regular basis, including weekly at a local coffee shop. We have also had educational meetings including public lectures regarding evolution around Darwin Day (Charles Darwin’s birthday) and a presentation on the science of belief with Skeptic founder Michael Shermer.

SEAFA has a very active Facebook group, a website with many informative links and a page. SEAFA is affiliated with the Council for Secular Humanism and the Secular Coalition of Alabama.
